I have a 30 year old house which i have owned for the last five years.
Getting water between gutter and fascia.
Are you getting water behind your gutter.
The gutters are getting old and i want to replace all.
The fascia board could be rotted and the gutter hangers unable to hold the gutters firmly against the building.
I had a look and think the problem is due to flashing being receded.
It s a bungalow so quite easy to access.
Ever wonder why that is.
There is water dripping down from fascia when it rains.
For example most ranch style homes have a 3 12 or 4 12 pitch roof.
When water drips between the fascia and the gutters the problem could be a compromised drip edge but it s also possible the gutters are overflowing.
The gutters then direct the water to a downspout allowing the water to run down until it reaches the ground.
Drip strip is designed to fill the gap between the bottom of the drip edge and the top of the gutter to insure the water will flow into the gutter preventing any damage to your fascia or other parts of your home or landscaping.
Now when you add wind the wind blows this water further up the underside of the sheet and if there s not enough overhang into the gutter the water will actually find its way over the back of the fascia and inside your ceiling or somewhere else it s not meant to be.
When the roof shingles do not extend past the metal drip edge the water will suck back on the metal drip edge this is called capillary action and run behind your gutters.
Capillary action is a water activity in which water adheres to a surface and follow the surface.
This video shows one of the reason why you can get water behind your gutter and some of th.
As i only moved in recently i don t know how long fascia and flashing were.
Other than being old and rusty they are working fine based on my obser.
The fascia itself is upvc not wood thank god.
Assuming the gutters have the correct slope the main reason for overflows is that the gutters are full of debris and need to be cleaned.
This is the sort of problem that rapidly gets worse as the more the fascia board is exposed to water the more it rots letting the gutter hangers fail.
